How to read the results
The effective rate smooths quota and accelerators into one number: total commission ÷ total sales. It is useful for sanity‑checking whether a plan pays roughly what you intend at typical performance. If you pay a base salary, total pay shows the combined figure for the period.
Example
At $50,000 sales and 10% rate, commission is $5,000. With a $2,000 base, total pay is $7,000 that period. Add a $40,000 quota and a 15% accelerator: the first $40k pays 10% ($4,000) and the $10k above quota pays 15% ($1,500) for $5,500 total commission.
Assumptions and caveats
This model ignores clawbacks, team splits, and capped accelerators. If you plan tiers or SPIFFs, approximate them with a higher accelerator at realistic performance. Always check the effective rate at both target and strong performance.

FAQ
How is commission calculated?
Without a quota, commission is sales × commission rate. With a quota, sales up to the quota earn the base rate and sales above it earn the accelerator rate (or the same rate if no accelerator is entered).
What is an accelerator?
A higher commission rate paid on sales above quota, used to reward over-performance.
What is the effective rate?
Total commission divided by total sales. With an accelerator it rises above the base rate once sales pass quota.
Does total pay include base salary?
Yes. Total pay is the optional base pay you enter plus the calculated commission for the same period.
