Knowledge-base chunk size estimator
Rough: tokens ≈ words × 1.3. Use 300–500 token chunks with overlap for SOP RAG.
Plan RAG chunks before you index SOPs
Chunk size shapes retrieval quality and prompt token cost. Estimate how many chunks a document yields at your target size before you wire the knowledge base into an agent.
How to use the chunk size estimator
Enter approximate document word count and target tokens per chunk (often 300–500 for SOPs). Review the chunk count, then configure overlap in your indexer — this tool does not split text for you.
Document size
39 chunks
≈ 15,600 tokens.
What the estimate means
It is a planning number from a simple tokens ≈ words × 1.3 rule. Validate with your model’s tokenizer and retrieval tests before production.
FAQ
How does this knowledge-base chunk size estimator work?
It approximates tokens as words × 1.3, then divides by your target tokens per chunk (rounded up). The 1.3 factor is a rough English heuristic — real tokenizers differ by model and language.
Why 300–500 token chunks for SOP RAG?
That range is a practical starting point for procedure docs: large enough to keep a step coherent, small enough to limit irrelevant context in the prompt. Tune with overlap and retrieval tests on your own SOPs — it is not a universal standard.
Does the tool add overlap between chunks?
No. It only estimates how many chunks you would get at a target size. In production RAG, overlapping windows (or sentence-aware splitters) help avoid cutting a step in half; configure overlap in your indexer.
How does chunk size affect LLM cost and hallucinations?
Larger retrieved chunks raise input tokens (see the LLM cost estimator) and can bury the relevant sentence. Smaller chunks need good retrieval so the agent still sees enough context. Pair chunking with citation requirements from the hallucination checklist.
Should every document use the same chunk size?
Not always. Short FAQs may use smaller chunks; long policy tables may need structure-aware splitting. Start with one target for SOPs, measure retrieval quality, then split exceptions.
Need RAG that cites SOPs without bloating prompts?
GoWith agentic builds size retrieval and require citations before write-backs. See all free tools, the prompt / SOP quality checker, the LLM hallucination checklist, and the LLM token cost estimator.
